John Poterson.jpgJohn Poterson was a powerful, switch-hitting catcher at Chandler High from 2000 to 2004. His hitting prowess was on full display his senior season, when he hit .431 with 13 home runs and 32 runs batted in. He was an all state selection at catcher his junior and senior seasons, and Baseball America rated him as the 78th best player in the country on the eve of the MLB draft. His performance at the 2003 Perfect Game National showcase demonstrated to professional scouts the potential within the Chandler star. He demonstrated a mature hitting approach against some of the best pitchers in the country. His exceptional power was evident during batting practice sessions, and scouts were enarmored with his leadership ability.
The New York Yankees selected Poterson in the 1st round with the 34th overall pick. While the pick was met with mixed reactions from fans, the Yankees were convinced that the switch-hitting Poterson was too good to pass up. For Poterson, this was a dream come true. In Brad Falduto's (East Valley Tribune) post-draft write up of Poterson, he revealed that the catcher had been born in New York and grown up a Yankees fan his whole life. Poterson's career could not have started any better.
Unfortunately, Poterson's pro career failed to live up to the Yankees expectations. Perhaps feeling the pressure of being such a high draft pick, Poterson failed to make it out of A Ball. He was out of the Yankees system after two years. He joined the Chilicothe Paints, an independent team. While Poterson showed some flashes of the power that had propelled him to the top of the draft, his performance was not good enough to convince another major league team to sign him.
