Harry Chandler followed the path of his brother, Dr. Alexander John Chandler, from their hometown of Coaticook, Quebec, Canada, to Michigan, and finally on to Arizona.  While in Michigan, he met and married Bertha Trowbridge Chandler.  They had two children, Marian Chandler and Louise Chandler Price.

After their wedding, Harry and Bertha moved to Phoenix, Arizona.  A. J. Chandler had already established himself in nearby Mesa, Arizona, and Harry went into business selling shoes.  After a few years, he moved to Mesa and developed the Southside Gas and Electric Company, with a hydro-electric power plant built on a drop in the Tempe Crosscut Canal in Mesa.  His plant provided electricity to Mesa and Tempe, and soon to the newly created town of Chandler.
