During the Great Depression, refugee families from the Dust Bowl region migrated through Chandler. These families made do with whatever living conditions they could find. Photographer Dorothea Lange, among others, was hired by The Works Progress Administration and the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Agricultural Economics to document the labor migration and the living conditions of these people. This series of photographs by Dorothea Lange document  the living conditions she witnessed in Goodyear (Ocotillo) in 1937 and on highway 87, south of Chandler in November 1940.

The Farm Security Administration (FSA) eventually built a cooperative farm in Chandler where these migrant farmers could live and work. See images of that cooperative HERE.
